Prof. Horst Knapp Prize 2018 goes to Andrea Hodoschek

Andrea Hodoschek, business columnist at the daily newspaper KURIER, was awarded the prestigious Prof. Horst Knapp Prize on Wednesday evening. The chairman of the jury, Ewald Nowotny, governor of the Austrian Central Bank, gave the laudation. As part of the festive award ceremony at the Bank Austria Kunstforum, the media and communication researcher Matthias Karmasin gave the keynote speech.

Doris Tomanek, long-standing member of the UniCredit Bank Austria Board responsible for Human Capital, stated at the presentation of the award for outstanding achievements in Austrian business journalism: “To answer the simple and for all of us so important question 'How does business work?' again and again in a legible, exciting and easily understandable way, even when it comes to complex or at first glance 'dry' topics - this is a high art that not every journalist succeeds in the same degree. The 2018 prizewinner, Andrea Hodoschek, is a thoroughbred journalist. Her name stands for the highest journalistic quality. And every week she offers her readers exciting and sometimes quite explosive exclusive stories from the business world and, so to speak, from the ‘engine room’ of important Austrian companies.”
The chairman of the jury, Ewald Nowotny, governor of the Austrian Central Bank, emphasized in his laudation: “Being awarded the Horst Knapp Prize is to be understood as a mandate to always carry out journalistic work independently and with the highest quality. I would like to congratulate this year's winner Andrea Hodoschek from the daily newspaper KURIER.”
The keynote speech was delivered by Matthias Karmasin, Director of the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Klagenfurt. Under the title “Why Quality? On the relevance of quality journalism for the economy and society in mediatized social worlds” he pointed out the importance of quality media for society as a whole, especially in the social media era, and how quality journalism can be refinanced.

The prizewinner, Andrea Hodoschek, has been a member of the business editorial team at the daily newspaper KURIER since 1981, while she has worked for this newspaper for more than 40 years in total. As deputy business editor from 1996 to 2010, she drove forward the reorientation of KURIER's business reporting, the success of which was reflected in constantly increasing readership figures. Hodoschek has been a highly regarded business columnist since 2010.

The Prof. Horst Knapp Prize has been funded by UniCredit Bank Austria every year since 1996

The prize money is 7,000 euros.

The jury also includes the following members: Karl Aiginger, director of the Policy Crossover Center: Vienna – Europe; Margarete Freisinger, freelance journalist; Martin Halama, head of Corporate Communications at UniCredit Bank Austria; Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger, rector of the Vienna University of Economics and Business; Andrea Helige, PR consultant; Veit Sorger, head of the Supervisory Board at MONDI AG; Josef Zechner, professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and – as last year’s prizewinner – Ulla Kramar-Schmid, member of the editorial board of the TV news programme ORF Zeit im Bild 2.
