Sustainable innovation ensures prosperity and competitiveness

In the context of the "Bank Austria Future Talks – Innovation Location Upper Austria" event which was held in the premises of WIFI Upper Austria on March 14, panelists discussed the measures and developments needed for consolidating and further developing the future chances of Austria and in particular of the province of Upper Austria as leading Research and Development location.

"High innovation power and target-oriented Research and Development activities are essential to ensuring that our country remains prosper and competitive in the global environment and to prevent highly skilled young people from moving to other countries", Bank Austria CEO Robert Zadrazil said in his opening speech. He also emphasized how extremely important it is to remain competitive in terms of innovation power and used Bank Austria as an example to illustrate how a leading domestic company responds to the challenges and demands of the 21st century with innovation.

Against this background, the well-known panelists questioned the meaning of national innovation systems, the social mission of established research institutions as well as the role of the free market economy during the subsequent panel discussion.

Analysis of Upper Austria as innovation location
Following a keynote speech of renowned philosopher Julian Nida-Rümelin, professor for philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and former Minister of State for Culture, Ludovit Garzik, Managing Director of the Austrian Council for Research and Technology Development, Axel Greiner, President of the Federation of Industry of Upper Austria, Andreas Janko, Vice Rector of the Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Thomas Stelzer, Deputy Head of the Provincial Government of Upper Austria, and Rudolf Trauner, President of the Economic Chamber of Upper Austria, discussed about Upper Austria’s position in terms of innovation and Research and Development. The Bank Austria Future Talks were moderated by Klaus Obereder, Managing Editor of ORF Upper Austria.

The topics under discussion ranged from supporting Upper Austria’s strengths, the connection of regional networks covering the full value added chain, the concrete conversion of research knowledge into usable innovation, to the cooperation between universities, research institutions, politics, and the industry at the location Upper Austria.
