Nearly one week after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, employees of Bank Austria have already collected EUR 50,000 in the course of a fund-raising drive launched by UniCredit Group. This is the pleasing interim result after nearly one week since the fund-raising drive will continue until 28th February.
It is of particular importance to help the large number of injured people as quick as possible and secure medical care as good as possible. The bank has thus decided to pass on the money raised from the donation to the international relief organisation Doctors without Borders.
"Given the human tragedy in Haiti, solidarity as shown by our employees as positive example is needed. The group will increase the donations at the end of the fund-raising drive in order to make a significant contribution to emergency relief on the spot. The first step will be to donate the earnings from UniCredit Group's art exhibition "PastPresentFuture" of EUR20,000 to the SOS Children's Village in Haiti", said Bank Austria CEO Willibald Cernko.
"Miraculously, the two SOS Children's Villages in Cap Haitien and Santo near Port-au-Prince have remained almost intact. We will thus establish provisional accommodation for children and families and set up a field hospital in the next few days and weeks. Reconstruction in the severely hit country, however, will take several years and we appreciate any support like the one by Bank Austria", says the president of the relief organization SOS Children's Village.
Employees of UniCredit Group from 22 countries will be able to support the emergency measures by Doctors without Borders through UniCredit Group's UNIDEA foundation by making a donation until 28th February, 2010. UNIDEA will increase the money raised from the donation at the end of the fund-raising drive.
