Gianni Franco Papa designated to head Bank Austria’s CEE operations

  • Experienced manager responsible for the Group’s planned growth

Today UniCredit’s Board of Directors in Milan has appointed Gianni Franco Papa, 54, as new Head of CEE Division of UniCredit. Depending on the decision of Bank Austria’s Supervisory Board he will be also appointed as new board member responsible for the CEE Banking Division at Bank Austria. In his new function Gianni Franco Papa will be responsible for the development of the leading international banking network in Central and Eastern Europe and for business in the CEE region. The network currently comprises about 3,860 branches and some 72,000 employees in 18 countries. About 900 new branches are planned to be added in the period to 2015.

Willibald Cernko, CEO of Bank Austria: “UniCredit, and Bank Austria as sub-holding company for CEE operations, have coped very well with the global economic crisis. We have generated a profit in each quarter and we are the bank with the highest profitability and the strongest capital base in Austria. We have many plans for the coming years. I am pleased that we will have an experienced manager to drive this planned growth: Gianni Franco Papa has a strong track record of business development and a very good knowledge of local markets.”

Gianni Franco Papa, a lawyer by training, has since 1979 held various functions in what is today UniCredit. He has been active in the banking group’s international operations for over twenty years. Having worked for UniCredit units in the world’s major financial centres such as Hong Kong, Singapore and New York, he recently was in charge of the banking subsidiaries in Slovakia and Ukraine and following CEE Corporate & Investment Banking. Gianni Franco Papa is married and has two children. He and his family live in Vienna.
