Austria’s leading bank will see a change at the top. Erich Hampel will retire as Chairman of the Management Board of Bank Austria at his own request with effect from 30 September 2009 and will become a member of the bank’s Supervisory Board. Willibald Cernko has been designated to succeed Erich Hampel as Chief Executive Officer with effect from 1 October 2009 subject to a resolution by the Supervisory Board on 29 July and the consent of the Austrian Financial Market Authority.
Erich Hampel, CEO of Bank Austria: “I made up my mind last year to retire as CEO for personal reasons, but then I postponed my decision as the financial crisis became even more pronounced. After all, I did not want to leave my team at the wrong time. In the meantime there are initial signs of improvement and Bank Austria continued to pursue its successful course even when the crisis came to a head. Following the mergers of banks in Central and Eastern Europe and the successful integration in UniCredit Group, Bank Austria is very well positioned to meet future challenges, too. So this is the right time to hand over to the new management team.“
Alessandro Profumo, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bank Austria: “I would like to thank Erich Hampel for his tireless work over many years. He has made a substantial contribution to the integration of our international banking group and the expansion of our market position in Central and Eastern Europe, and thus to the success of our Group. I am pleased that he will continue to make his expertise available to Bank Austria and UniCredit Group, for which he will perform several supervisory board functions in Austria and in CEE. Erich Hampel will also take part in the negotiations with representatives of the Austrian federal government on the raising of participation capital, in which Willibald Cernko will also be involved as his designated successor. Willibald Cernko is a highly experienced and successful manager who is very familiar with our Group and our markets from the various management functions he has held. He is the ideal successor to Erich Hampel and will continue to pursue the bank’s successful course.“
Erich Hampel, 58, has been active for Bank Austria and its predecessor institutions for twelve years. From 1997 to 2002 he was Chairman of the Management Board of Creditanstalt, since 2000 he has been a member of the Management Board of Bank Austria and in 2004 he became Chairman of the Management Board of Bank Austria. In addition, Erich Hampel has been Head of the CEE Division in UniCredit Group since December 2005, with responsibility for 24 million customers in 18 countries. During his time as CEO of Bank Austria, the bank’s total assets increased from about EUR 146 billion to most recently EUR 222 billion, and the bank further expanded its leading position in Austria and Central and Eastern Europe. Erich Hampel started his career at Citibank Austria before moving to Österreichische Postsparkasse, where he was active for many years and held the positions of Governor and Chairman of the Management Board of PSK. Erich Hampel is married and has two children.
His designated successor Willibald Cernko, 53, held various positions at Bank Austria and its predecessor institutions from 1985 to 2007. From 2002 he was responsible for CEE operations and from 2003 to 2007 he was a member of the Management Board with responsibility for retail banking before moving within UniCredit Group to HVB in Germany. As a member of the Management Board of HVB, Willibald Cernko was responsible for retail banking from 2006 onwards. Since May 2008, he has been a member of the Executive Committee Retail of UniCredit Group, where he has market responsibility for Austria and Germany.
