Bank Austria customers donate EUR 110,000 to help children with cancer

Bank Austria customers have donated around EUR 110,000 for St. Anna Children's Cancer Research over the last 12 months (as of 1 November 2009). During a visit to the research institute today, Bank Austria's chairman of the Management Board, Willi Cernko, presented a symbolic check to the head of the institute, Professor Helmut Gadner. Bank Austria has supported St. Anna Children's Cancer Research with its mascot campaign from the very beginning. The new campaign was recently launched at the end of October 2009. As a thank-you gift, all donors who contribute EUR 9.90 or more will receive "Luki the cuddly rabbit", the new mascot for children's cancer research.

According to Cernko, "We have been supporting St. Anna Children's Cancer Research's mascot campaign for many years. I am deeply moved again and again by the helpfulness and generosity of our customers, and I am proud to act as the ‘messenger' on behalf of these people."

Professor Gadner expressed his sincere gratitude for the years of support: "Without the impressive support of Bank Austria's Management Board and the extraordinary dedication of its employees, our stuffed animal campaign would not be nearly as successful. Our research has been funded mainly by donations since the beginning. The fact that we are now able to save three out of four children and young people who would have been considered incurable 40 years ago is also thanks to Bank Austria's customers."

The Children's Cancer Research Institute association was founded in autumn 1986 and it launched a broad-based donation campaign. The donations were used to expand the laboratory on the top floor of St. Anna Children's Hospital. In June 1988, the institute began to conduct research and has made outstanding scientific achievements since then. By optimising treatment strategies and reducing the side effects of therapies, the institute benefits all children and young cancer patients. The association's name was shortened to St. Anna Children's Cancer Research in 2006, and at the beginning of 2009, researchers moved into the institute's new building at Zimmermannplatz, which is directly connected to St. Anna Children's Hospital. Bank Austria supports the donation campaign by providing donation payment forms for free and by distributing the current year's mascot to the donors.
