Bank Austria expands its corporate banking structure

  • Helmut Bernkopf, the director of corporate banking, will also be responsible for investment banking and economic research in Austria in the future
  • Corporate customers benefit from comprehensive advice from one source
  • New structure in effect on 31 July 2009

Subject to the Supervisory Board's decision, Bank Austria will integrate the Markets & Investment Banking Division into its corporate banking activities on 31 July in accordance with UniCredit's organisational structure. This expanded business unit will go by the name of Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) and will be headed by Bank Austria director Helmut Bernkopf. Bernkopf will also be responsible for all investment banking matters and Austrian economic research in the future. Bank Austria CEO Erich Hampel has served as the interim head of the former Markets & Investment Banking Division since May 2008.

Combining the Corporate Banking and Markets & Investment Banking units will result in an even more effective and efficient new business segment. This should allow Bank Austria's corporate customers to enjoy shorter decision-making processes for important transactions and to receive all-round service from one source. The new Corporate & Investment Banking unit will, for example, not only be able to offer companies traditional financing options but will also be able to issue bonds on the capital market. At the same time, there will be a clear distinction between the employees responsible for customer service and those who provide product support, which will allow more specialisation for both functions.

According to Bank Austria director Helmut Bernkopf, "Holistic service from a single advisor is without a doubt a major trend in customer relations. Our new structure will allow us to build an even closer relationship with our customers in the future and to offer concrete solutions in response to their wishes and concerns more quickly. In this way, we will define a new standard in service for all stakeholders."

Bank Austria currently serves around 100,000 corporate customers, making it the market leader in Austria. Depending on the size of the companies, Bank Austria serves between 45 and 88 per cent of all corporate customers. Some 56 per cent of Bank Austria's corporate customers regard it as their main bank. This means that among all of Austria's credit institutions, Bank Austria serves as the main bank for the highest proportion of corporate customers.
