Helmut A. Gansterer receives the 2007 Horst Knapp Prize

Today Helmut A. Gansterer, co-publisher of the economic magazine trend and a freelance journalist, was honoured with Bank Austria's distinguished Horst Knapp Prize for his journalistic achievements in 2007. The prize was presented this evening by Erich Hampel, chairman of the managing board at Bank Austria. "Helmut A. Gansterer is an extremely gifted journalist. He has played a decisive role in magazine journalism in Austria over the course of several decades and last year once again demonstrated what it means to have your own opinion and to back that opinion up with a tremendous amount of factual knowledge in countless articles, columns, guest commentaries, lectures and discussions," says Hampel, explaining the jury's decision.

The Horst Knapp Prize includes a monetary award of EUR 6,000. The prize has been sponsored by Bank Austria on an annual basis since 1996 and is awarded to journalists by an independent jury headed by Erich Streißler, professor emeritus of economics at the University of Vienna, in remembrance of the doyen of Austrian economic journalism. The Horst Knapp Prize recognises outstanding journalistic achievements that present complicated economic and socio-political issues in a clear manner that is easy for the average person to understand.

Helmut A. Gansterer (62) studied economics at the Academy of International Trade in Vienna and joined the staff of the newly-founded economic magazine trend in 1970, even before having completed his studies. In 1971 he moved on to work as a copywriter at the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather and also founded the economic magazine Economy. In 1974, after two years as editor-in-chief at Economy, Gansterer was hired as the deputy-editor-in-chief at trend, where he became the editor-in-chief two years later and was named publisher a year after that. Gansterer was the editor-in-chief and sole publisher of trend until 1997. Since then, he has shared this function with Christian Rainer. In addition to his activities as a freelance journalist – including as a regular contributor to the automotive magazine autorevue since 1973 – Gansterer is the author and co-author of numerous books and has received a number of journalism awards.

The following journalists have been awarded the Horst Knapp Prize in the past:
Reinhard Göweil and Waltraud Langer (1996), Georg Wailand (1997) and Regina Forster (sponsorship award 1997), Michael Hann (1998), Liselotte Palme (1999), Andreas Schnauder (2000), Walter Sonnleitner (2001), Margarete Freisinger (2002), Richard Wiens (2003), Christine Domforth (2004), Michael Csoklich, Eva Pfisterer (2005) and Renate Graber (2006).
