Customer Information

Several media sources contained current reports of an incident in Bank Austria's online banking system.
In this context we want to provide our customers with the following information:

  • A hardware problem resulted in the faulty allocation of user sessions in our online banking. This took place in a short period (from 0:40 to 1:10 hrs on 5 October 2010) and had only a very limited impact. As a result of this problem, account data of customers could be seen by other customers.
  • Customers who were not logged in between 0:40 and 1:10 hrs. were not affected. Only the data of customers who were themselves logged into online banking betweeen 0:40 and 1:10 hrs. on 5 October could be seen by others in particular circumstances. For the purpose of avoiding a breakdown, OnlineBanking is run on different servers at different locations. As the problem occurred at only one node, only OnlineBanking sessions between 0:40 and 1:10 hrs. were affected. The customers concerned will be informed by Bank Austria.
  • The problem involved the erroneous presentation of data in online banking, but it was never possible for anyone to conduct transactions via a third-party account or a safe-custody account.
  • The problem was quickly identified (a faulty component was responsible for an incorrect allocation of the sessions). The error was promptly rectified; additional security measures will prevent another recurrence of this problem.
