In accordance with the court decision by Judge Shirley Wohl Kram in connection with the Settlement Agreement in the matter of Austrian and German Bank Holocaust Litigation initiated in the US District Court, Southern District of New York, the independent Historical Commission required under the Settlement Agreement started its work on 30 June 2000.
Historical report and historical archive
The Court required the following tasks to be performed: to compile a report on the policies of Creditanstalt-Bankverein, Länderbank Wien and Zentralsparkasse Wien during the period 1933 to 1946 as well as on the basis of the Opinion and Order of the Judge dated 6 January 2000 to collect and document all the related documents and to create a permanent archive which is open to the public.

Research work completed after five years
The international and independent Historical Commission of Bank Austria completed its work with the presentation in November 2006 of the 2-volume publication "Österreichische Banken und Sparkassen im Nationalsozialismus und in der Nachkriegszeit".
The first bank archive in Austria that is open to the public
The Bank Austria Historical Archive, modelled on corporate archives in other countries and opened in May 2008, is the first bank archive in Austria that is open to the public.
