 FAQ

In June 2007, Bank Austria introduced a new TAN procedure for OnlineBanking and BusinessNet:

The mobileTAN procedure is a further development of the iTAN procedure (indexed TAN). It is the safest TAN procedure available at present.

Using the mobileTAN procedure you will receive a mobileTAN on your mobile phone every time you need to sign an order. As you will receive mobileTANs via SMS on demand, no more TAN letters will be sent to you by mail.

Advantages of mobileTAN in brief:

  • Sign orders quickly and easily.
  • No more TAN letters to keep.
  • You do not need to send an SMS, you just have to receive an SMS.
  • Available at any time around the world.
  • No additional costs.*

OnlineBanking and BusinessNet users can choose whether to use the iTAN or mobileTAN procedure. Since the mobileTAN procedure is the most secure TAN system that is currently available, we recommend you to switch to mobileTAN.

You can switch separately for OnlineBanking and BusinessNet; for example, you can start using mobileTANs in OnlineBanking and continue using the iTAN procedure in BusinessNet.

How to switch in OnlineBanking: in "Options" / "Switch to mobileTAN"

How to switch in BusinessNet: in "Administration" / "TAN Method" / "Telephone Number Change"

We would like to explain the new iTAN procedure on the basis of the following example.

Step 1: Create the desired orders (transfers, standing orders, etc.) and save them as usual.

Step 2: To sign the orders you have created, click "Signature". Here you will see all orders that have not yet been signed.

Step 3: Select up to three orders that you wish to sign now.

Exception: Foreign orders and foreign cheques have to be signed separately in each case.

Step 4: Click "GO TO SIGNATURE". This will generate a mobileTAN that is sent to your mobile phone and takes you to a page that contains the orders you selected for signing in the previous step.

Step 5: Verify the order information in the SMS (payee account number, payee bank sorting code and amount), then enter the mobileTAN in the OnlineBanking system and click "SIGN". When you enter the mobileTAN correctly, your signature will be confirmed with "mobileTAN was consumed. The following orders will be executed subject to availability of cover...".

* SMS will not be charged by Bank Austria, provider charges may apply (e.g. roaming fees).
